Teacher Workshop: Puppetry in the Classroom

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools is pleased to offer our 2nd Puppetry Teacher Workshop! Professional puppet artist, Lisa Leibering, will lead our Beyond the Paper Bag: Puppetry in the Classroom workshop.

In this hands-on workshop, educators learn how to incorporate puppetry into their classroom in order to expand learning opportunities for all students and enhance their teaching in any subject (yes, even math and science!).  Participants will create several simple puppets, experience basic manipulation techniques, and engage in storytelling exercises.  They will also learn tips for introducing puppetry to their students and incorporating this versatile art form into virtually any lesson plan.  

This workshop is intended for anyone who is a teacher.  From a college classroom to a community center, a preschool to a park, the lessons workshop participants experience can be utilized with all ages in a variety of settings.

Lisa Leibering

Lisa Leibering is a theatrical designer, puppeteer, and teaching artist.  She holds a BFA in Puppetry/Children’s Theatre from West Virginia University and a MA in Theatre for Youth from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She has taught classes on a range of theatre topics, including puppetry, creative drama, and costume design, to a wide population from toddlers to teachers, and convicted felons to college students.  In addition to freelance design, her professional portfolio includes working for Grey Seal Puppets, serving as Resident Designer and Costume Shop Manager for the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, and managing the Character Shop for Paramount Parks.  She is currently pursuing a PhD in theatre at the University of Pittsburgh, where her research focuses on the intersections between current cognitive science research and design aesthetics in theatre for youth productions.
